Ferns – prehistoric & future plants

Many of the species of fern we have today date from 145 million years ago. The first ferns appeared 360 million years ago. In the first picture, you can see the tiny spores behind the fronds. Ferns do not seed or flower.

Ferns remove toxic chemicals from indoor spaces. They have been used by NASA to prevent sick building syndrome – “If man is to move into closed environments, on Earth or in space, he must take along nature’s life support system.” Plants.

  1. News for me that ferns can improve the air quality in buildings. Your two photos show the fine details of what appears to be their delicate filtration system. Well done!
